This week in our Best Niagara Wines Under $20 and Not in the LCBO series we head to The Lakeview Wine Co. to discover one of EastDell’s delicious reds.
Article by Thomas Reid
EastDell Estates has been a fixture in Niagara for at least two decades. Now a part of The Lakeview Wine Co. group, their wines are produced on Niagara Stone Road in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
It was the reds that seemed to be particularly appealing on this dreary and cold “spring” day, and the Black Label Shiraz was the standout.
With a cooler climate, Niagara is not known for being particularly well suited for the Shiraz varietal. However, depending on where you are in the world, Shiraz (or Syrah) is produced in different styles as a result of the terroir. Certainly, Niagara Shiraz is likely to be a fuller-bodied style, softer tannin, and jammie, fruit forward with some spice on the palate.
Due, in part, to Niagara’s moderately cool climate, EastDell’s Black Label Shiraz is more of a medium-bodied red. It has typical characteristics of plum and cherry with a touch of smoke on the nose. On the palate are further classic flavours of black pepper and red fruit.
The fruit for the Black Label Shiraz comes exclusively from the Tregunno Vineyards in Niagara-on-the-Lake. It was aged for 12 months in American, French, and Hungarian Oak. Select barrels were used for this single varietal red.
This is a very satisfying (and rare) Niagara Shiraz. One I’m inclined to pour next to a spicy BBQ pulled pork sandwich!
