Gin cured salmon at Wellington Court Restaurant, St. Catharines, ON

Wellington Court Restaurant

St Catharines Street wouldn’t be a guide to “the best of the Niagara Region” without a post about Wellington Court Restaurant. It is a St. Catharines’ fine dining institution that has dragged foodies off the wine route for decades.

Executive Chef Erik Peacock creates an ever-evolving menu designed around local seasonal produce from the Niagara Region.

Chef Peacock and his partner Dale Camroux-Peacock have become a prolific force in the Niagara Region. Along with their booming catering business, they also manage an events space at Wellington Court called UP at Wellington, The Coach House Cafe at Henry of Pelham Winery, Chilero Mexican Street Food, and the soon-to-open restaurant at Bench Brewery in Beamsville.

The food at Wellington Court never disappoints. The interior is intimate and the decor is tastefully modern, with artworks by local artists hung on the walls.

If you are looking for somewhere to impress guests from out-of-town, this restaurant will do the trick. It’s a perfect example of the high-level of fine dining and beautiful seasonal produce available in Niagara.

On our most recent visit, Chief Researcher enjoyed the Spicy Carrot Soup to start, while I savoured every bite of the Gin Cured Salmon with sous vide egg, salmon roe, wild fennel, and salt + vinegar chip (check out the featured image at the top of this post!).

The salmon was delicate, flavourful and perfectly balanced with the creamy egg, and tart salt and vinegar chip.

For mains, Chief Researcher indulged in fancy pub fare with the Ribeye with fat chips, red wine jus, and greens.

I opted for the deliciously tender Duo of Beef, which was served with sweet potato and a smoked lentil jus that added gorgeous texture and flavour to the dish.

When it came to dessert, I had to try the Pavlova with charcoal meringue, black sesame, and raspberry sorbet. I was so curious to see how this dish would be served (and how it would taste), and it did not disappoint.

The striking black meringue added just the right amount of sweetness and crunch to the tart raspberry sorbet.

Wellington Court Restaurant is a special spot to celebrate an occasion, meet a group of foodie mates for an indulgent meal, or reserve a quiet corner for a romantic dinner. It is without question one of our favourite date-night locales.
