Two weeks ago we featured Greenlane Estates’ Guts & Glory – a lovely blend of Chardonnay and Riesling, noting it as perhaps a middle ground for those wine drinkers who are dubious about the Chardonnay varietal. Last week we went the whole hog with Meldville’s Second Edition Chardonnay.
This week’s ‘Best Niagara Wine Under $20 & Not in the LCBO‘ is the finest example of Riesling from Angel’s Gate Winery in Beamsville. Compared to our previous featured wineries, Angel’s Gate is quite well represented in the LCBO. This, of course, does not disqualify them from the column. My only goal is to uncover excellent value Niagara wine that you may have missed due to its lack of representation in your local liquor store.
If you have only sampled the wine Angel’s Gate has in the LCBO, you will have missed out on their incredible 2008 (yes, 10 years old!) Mountainview Riesling. Only 500 cases of it were made (probably why it wouldn’t have been considered for the LCBO) and, given its age, it is not a stretch to assume that there aren’t too many remaining – so be quick!
Similar to the last Riesling we reviewed from Big Head, this is a beautiful example of the varietal done in a dry style. Citrus, significant minerality, and a hint of petrol (a typical aroma for aged Riesling) on the nose make way to lemon, white grapefruit, and lime zest on the palate.
This is an excellent wine to pair with chicken, fish, or mild curries. As long as your dish isn’t too heavy or rich, the Mountainview Riesling from Angel’s Gate may just do the trick.
