Meldville Second Edition 2016 Chardonnay

Meldville’s 2016 Second Edition Chardonnay

The brainchild of renowned winemaker (and former winemaker of the year) Derek Barnett, Meldville, named after his childhood home in Swinford, England, is a virtual winery specializing in small-batch and limited edition wine. Fortunately for those looking to try before they buy, he has partnered with Legends Estate in Beamsville on the lakeshore where Meldville wines can be tasted and purchased at their retail store.

Thanks to the warm and dry growing season, the vines for this chardonnay were forced to dig deep for sustenance, giving the fruit more complexity and depth of flavour. Harvested in mid-October, the grapes were cold settled following pressing and transferred to three- and four-year-old French oak barrels, resulting in a more delicate chardonnay.

It’s lees (spent yeast particles) were stirred weekly for five months for the purposes of building texture and balance. It has also undergone malolactic fermentation, which converts the malic acid present in wine to lactic acid giving the wine a rounder, creamier texture and flavour.

Meldville 2016 Chardonnay

The 2016 Meldville Chardonnay has aromas of stone fruit and pear with notes of toffee and butterscotch. It’s well balanced with a rich creamy finish. Despite its “drink now” price point, the wine maker suggests it will cellar well for four to six years. But why wait?!
