My New Year’s resolutions for 2018 didn’t include more exercise and cutting out carbs. In fact, it was quite the opposite. High on the list: find more awesome brunch spots! So, discovering Revalee Brunch Cafe in Vineland was a big tick for my list.
Revalee was opened in December 2017 by Executive Chef Mitchell Lamb and his brother-in-law Michael Dilliott. This family affair started with the creation of The Box Lunch Brigade, a soon-to-be launched online lunch subscription company where you can have a freshly-prepared lunch delivered to your home, work or school. However, when Mitchell and Michael found this sweet cafe location in Vineland, they couldn’t resist opening a brunch spot as well.
White subway tiles, neutral-coloured walls and timber counter tops give the interior a fresh modern look. The addition of 1920s-style posters, large multi-lite windows and an eye-catching light fixture that looks like twisted brass instruments give it an art deco edge.
Open 7 days a week for brunch from 8am to 3pm, Revalee has a delicious selection of modern brunch fare with plenty of vegan options, and almost everything can be prepared gluten free.
The menu is divided into Omni and Vegan with unique items in both categories – like the Scandinavian Brunch of pickled herring and cured bacon, or the Butternut Brown Sugar Bisque with sourdough croutons, hemp hearts, granola, spiced pear and coconut cream. At the time of writing this everything on the menu is $13 (except the avocado toast $9). Mitchell and Michael hope this standardized pricing encourages guests to try something different without money being a factor in their selection.
Chef Mitchell, formerly of The Lake House, says he is passionate about using locally grown produce, which is abundant all year thanks to the amount of greenhouses in the Niagara Region.
For our first visit, I sampled the Huevos Rancheros, which included black bean and corn fritters, refried beans, perfectly runny fried eggs, house-made tomato chilli sauce with just the right amount of heat, chorizo, avocado and pico.
My Chief Researcher had the Avocado Toast (a brunch must!) with chorizo, candied squash, chevre and microgreens. Just as we hoped the meals were fresh and delicious, and the portions were generous.
Revalee serve tasty Pilot Coffee (a favourite of mine), which is roasted in Toronto, and a large selection of Pluck Tea, also from Toronto, which uses local Niagara ingredients in their teas such as organic grape skins from Southbrook Vineyard.
I’m glad Revalee is open 7 days a week so I can pop in whenever I am in the area. It would be a great spot to stop for a bite before or after a hike at Ball’s Falls or before wine tasting in Twenty Valley.
