PondView 2016 Cabernet Merlot

Our 'Best Wines Under $20 and Not in the LCBO' series is back for 2018 with a tasty Cab Merlot from PondView.

Article by Thomas Reid

I thought I’d begin the new year of articles with a re-cap of what our wine series is all about. It’s no secret that the Niagara wines available at the LCBO represent only a fraction of wines and wineries available to us. It also stands to reason, that when there is a middleman (LCBO) between the producer and the consumer, the consumer is bound to pay more.

On the flip side, whether wineries are represented in the LCBO or not, there are bound to be excellent value found in wine only available at the cellar door, and I’m here to find it.

PondView Wine Tasting 2016 Cab Merlot, Niagara

This week’s ‘Best Niagara Wine Under $20 & NOT Available in the LCBO’ is from PondView Estate Winery. Their 2016 Cabernet Merlot is a blend of 60 percent Cabernet (Cabernet Franc AND Cabernet Sauvignon – but how much of each?) and 40 percent Merlot.

With only three months of oak ageing, this Bordeaux blend in a new-world style is rich with ripe fruit, earthy black cherry, and plum with hints of black licorice and vanilla on the nose. The Blueberry and blackberry on the palate with soft tannins on the finish makes this wine another example of the superb 2016 vintage, allowing for excellent drinking now.

Also, for those with a sweet tooth, the Niagara Ice Wine festival begins this weekend (and runs through to 28 January). Check out Winter Wine Fest this weekend in Jordan.

Finally, as we begin this new year of discovering great wine in this world-class wine region of ours, I’m interested to hear about your excellent discoveries, and would love to feature them. Remember, there are only two rules (under $20 and not available in the LCBO). Hit us up on your social media of choice: Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.
