10 things to do with kids this winter in St Catharines and Niagara

As the weather gets chilly, throw some layers on the kids and embrace the season.

Here’s our list of 10 fun kids activities you can do this Fall/Winter in St Catharines and the Niagara Region.

Get creative

Indulge your family’s creative sides and go along to a Family Workshop at Rodman Hall Art Centre. Experience their current exhibition and make inspired art projects and crafts together. There is a holiday-themed workshop coming up on Sunday December 10.

Hit the ice

Throw on warm clothes and expend some energy on the ice. Check out our list of outdoor ice skating rinks in the Niagara Region. Some are free and have skate rental and concessions available.

See live theatre

The FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre in downtown St Catharines has a line-up of awe-inspiring live shows for the kids. Check out their website for all the details on shows like The Underwater Bubble Show and Dinosaur Zoo Live.

Have a tasty winter treat at the ice cream parlour

It may seem counterintuitive to head to an ice cream shop in winter, but Hometown Ice Cream in downtown St Catharines has a delicious range of winter treats on offer for little and big kids, like really good hot chocolate and fresh baked cookies and pies. It’s a perfect spot to stop for a pick-me-up before or after a show at the PAC.

Discover more than just books at the library

Check out your local library for a list of fun activities for the kids of all ages, from Legos to crafts, and story times with teddy, there is more than just a good read to discover.

Jump around

When the kids start getting cabin fever at home and really need to expend some energy, head to an indoor trampoline park. Sky Zone in St Catharines has a really cool set-up with different areas for jumping, foam pits, as well as playing basketball, dodge ball, gladiator games, and scouring high flying obstacle courses. They also have toddler times for little ones.

Catch a flick

The Filmhouse in downtown St Catharines has fun family friendly films coming up in December and January, like the classic A Christmas Story, and thought-provoking features such as The Breadwinner, which follows Eleven-year-old Parvana with her family in war-torn Kabul, Afghanistan. Plus, for the adults, there is Christmas cheer in the form of local wine and beer available at the concession stand! Check out The Filmhouse’s session times for more.

Enjoy a little nature indoors

Take a break from winter and visit the Butterfly Conservatory in Niagara Falls. Be transported to a tropical paradise full of lush vegetation, trickling waterfalls and thousands of vibrantly coloured butterflies.  The kids will love learning about all the different species. If possible, lend them a camera and watch them become immersed in nature.

Cheer on your local hockey team

You don’t have to take the kids far to see all the action on the ice. Check out the Niagara Ice Dogs at the Meridian Centre in downtown St Catharines.

See the Christmas lights

Hop in the car and take a magical trip around your neighbourhood to see the Christmas lights. Check out Rio Lane in St Catharines, where the whole street comes together to put on an amazing light display.
