Pho Dau Bo restaurant on Geneva Street in St Catharines serves a large selection of the delicious traditional Vietnamese soup, Pho.
Pho, pronounced like Fuh or Faux (there is some debate on this topic), is a Vietnamese noodle soup consisting of broth, rice noodles called bánh phở, a few herbs, and meat – usually either beef or chicken.
It has become very popular outside of Vietnam in recent years as a flavourful, relatively healthy and cheap eat-out or takeaway option.
A good Pho broth is crystal clear and packs a punch of flavour; earthy beef or chicken with spices like cinnamon, star anise, cloves and cardamom.
Whether you are more adventurous and like your Pho with rare beef and tripe or want to opt for the grilled chicken, Pho Dau Bo has plenty of options and the broth is really good.
Just as you hope with a bowl of Pho, it is fragrant, herbaceous and full of flavour. I especially liked the spicy hoisin sauce served with our grilled chicken Pho, which you can drizzle on top for a nice kick.
The atmosphere at Pho Dau Bo is casual and busy, and the interior is simple. If you’re aren’t feeling the vibe here, Pho is also a delicious, easy and cheap take out meal.
