The Black Sheep Lounge, located in Welland about 20 minutes drive from St Catharines, is a friendly spot to meet for a well-crafted coffee and food with flair.
Anyone who knows me knows I am always on the look out for a talented barista who can whip up a perfectly proportioned flat white espresso coffee. And, I found one here at the Black Sheep!
If you are wondering how a flat white is any different than a latte or a cappuccino, here comes my biased description. A cappuccino has stiff foam and is like drinking bubbles with coffee at the bottom. Latte has a little foam on the top and lots of milk, and it tastes like milky coffee. A flat white has an even mix of liquid milk and smooth velvet foam so it is like drinking an espresso, but more delicious.
Not only do they make a decent flat white at the Black Sheep, but they roast their own coffee beans right in the cafe. So, no matter how you like your coffee served, it’s super fresh. They also have Nitrogenated Cold Brew Coffee on tap if you are looking for something refreshing.
The service was friendly and unpretentious, and they were patient and accommodating with our young children.
The decor is simple and hip with the coffee roaster in the corner and a little stage at the far end where they host live music (check The Black Sheep Lounge out on Facebook or Instagram for upcoming events).
It was nice to see creative menu items at the Black Sheep like Carbonara Risotto, Smoky Red Lentil Sloppy Joe, and Buffalo Cauliflower Tacos – things that you don’t get at every other cafe. There also appeared to be lots of options for vegetarians and vegans, and gluten-free options are available on request.
On the day we visited, I ordered the sticky chicken wings, which were brined and coated in a Sriracha Honey Lime sauce. They were very tender and tasty, but I should have ordered a little fresh salad to break up the sweetness.
Chief Researcher ordered The Porkinator, a pulled-pork sandwich with house-made pickles and slaw that he said was really good. It also came with a side of house-cooked potato chips, which were fresh out of the fryer and quickly devoured by everyone at the table.
I will definitely be back to The Black Sheep Lounge in Welland for the laidback atmosphere, the food, and, most of all, the fresh flat white espresso.
