Bistro Mirepoix

A brunch day is a day when you sleep in late, maybe skip breakfast, and meander to your favourite spot to enjoy the best of both breakfast and lunch. It is my favourite way to start the day, and I must say this is the best brunch I have had since moving to the Niagara Region – so it’s a particularly good day for me.

Bistro Mirepoix St Catharines

Situated on Court Street, just north of downtown St Catharines, Mirepoix opened its sunshine yellow door on Wednesday 13 September 2017. They are open from 8am to 2pm for breakfast and lunch – but mainly brunch.

Interior of Bistro Mirepoix St Catharines

The interior is simple and welcoming and the service is attentive and thoughtful. Fresh coffee is whisked to our table as soon as we are seated and perusing the delicious menu is a treat.

Coffee at Bistro Mirepoix St Catharines

With options like French toast with caramelized Niagara peaches, steak and eggs with Guinness braised onions, and crab stuffed mushrooms with saffron hollandaise and fingerling potatoes, it is rather hard to choose.

Menu at Bistro Mirepoix St Catharines

Owner Maddy and Chef Warren do a fabulous job of using the best of the Niagara Region, and Maddy assures me the menu will be rotating, seasonal and, wherever possible, local and organic.

They also cater to vegan and gluten free, which, being gluten free myself, I always appreciate. What I am excited to hear is that it isn’t just frozen GF bread to replace the normal fare, but freshly baked gluten-free corn bread, which was just the right amount of crumbly and moist and all-round delicious.

To accompany the corn bread I chose the Lobster Eggs Benedict. It is rich and decadent. Obviously not an everyday indulgence but it made the morning feel like a special occasion.

Grilled cheese and tomato soup at Bistro Mirepoix St Catharines

My chief researcher has the “Grilled Cheese” (which is really so much more!) with a spicy tomato soup. It has delicately cut slices of pork belly balanced with crispy local pear, creamy brie cheese and sweet caramelized onions, and the accompanying tomato soup is super fresh with just the right amount of spice.

Being at Mirepoix you can feel the passion that Maddy and Chef Warren have put into their new venture. It’s exciting to see something like this pop up in the downtown St Catharines area, and I will definitely be back.
