Balzac Coffee Niagara-on-the-Lake

As a new resident of St Catharines, I have been on the lookout for a decent cup of espresso coffee prepared by a talented barista in my favorite style – a flat white. But, I think coffee aficionados would agree that pickings are currently a little slim here.

However, head out to Balzac’s Coffee Roasters at Niagara-on-the-Lake and you will find the good stuff. The coffee is smooth with just the right amount of perfectly steamed velvety crema.

Balzac’s have been serving Fair Trade Organic coffee, sugar and cocoa since 1997 and their milk is organic and ethically sourced; this along with the company’s commitment to roasting in an energy-efficient manner and sourcing local ingredients for their cafe where possible means you can feel even better about enjoying their smooth roast.

It’s not just about the perfectly roasted beans though; having a quality espresso machine and the well-trained barista is a must for a brew that isn’t over-packed or burnt. When it comes to flat white, I am looking for the perfect extraction of coffee, with no bitterness and the right amount of creamy sweetness. And, Balzac’s NOTL definitely brought their A-game on the days I have visited.

Balzac’s Coffee Roasters do have a number of locations serving their quality coffee, however, I will say that the NOTL location has some of the best baristas I have found in the region.

It is also the perfect spot to sit and while away an afternoon in this charming town. Pop inside and appreciate the detailed decor or pull up a Parisian-style bistro chair outside with your pup and do some people watching, or take your KeepCup for a stroll down to the picturesque lake.

There is also a delicious selection of baked goods to savor, and they cater for vegan and gluten-free friends. Both the gluten-free brownie and blondie were rich and moist, and the sweetness was a perfect pairing for my strong flat white.
